Plantar fasciitis can be a painful condition, but there is a treatment plan for it
What is it?
Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the fibrous band of tissue that spans the length of the foot connecting the heel to the toes. The plantar fascia acts as a shock absorber and supports the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. When excessive stress is applied to the plantar fascia through a specific event or cumulative trauma, an inflammatory responds may develop, causing a very painful condition with weight bearing activities. Chronic inflammation may eventually cause a heel spur that is visible via X-ray.
Possible causes:
- Faulty foot mechanics: “Flat feet.”
- Improper footwear: Shoes with inadequate arch support or have excessive wear.
- Physical activity overload: Advancing too quickly in sports/activity.
- Weight: Sudden weight gain.
- Other factors: Age, family tendency and disease such as diabetes or arthritis.
You may exhibit symptoms of plantar fasciitis if you experience a sharp stabbing pain on the bottom of your foot near to your heel. Pain can be the worst during stepping down from bed directly after waking, but can be triggered again if you sit for a long period of time or even stand for a long period of time. Ignoring these painful symptoms can inhibit you from performing daily functions, or even cause more pain in the future. Hip, back, knee, and foot problems can also persist if treatment is not sought.
Treatment can involve:
- Physical Therapy consultation.
- Rest.
- Stretching and strengthening.
- Inflammation and pain management.
- Use of orthotics, arch supports or heel lift.
- Use of well fitting, appropriate shoes.
- A night splint or boot.
